The Castle

No one is envious of the Kerrigan family. They live next to an airport, in the middle of the passenger parki ng lot. When the airport announces plans to tear down the house and build a new runway on the property, the fighting spirit of family father Darryl is awoken. He is ready to do whatever it takes to keep their beloved home. Helped by a smalltime lawyer he takes the case all the way to the High Court of Australia.
The creative team behind The Castle is a, in Australia well-known, comedy group of four people. Beside the writing they have all had active roles in the film team; Rob Stich has directed, Jane Kennedy did the casti ng and was involved in the work with sound and music, and Santo Cilauro he helped the cinematographer with the camera work. Tom Gleisner took on the biggest responsibility for the screenplay. After several successful productions they thought the time was right to make a movie, and figured out a simple comedy that would be inexpensive and fast to produce. And it did go fast, instead of the planned 20 days of shooting, the whole thing was in the can after ten days.
The Kerrigan family is happy, despite their standards of living. They love each other unconditionally. One of the sons is in prison for armed robbery, but no one in the family condemns him forthis. The family head, Darryl, runsatowingfirm. He is an unbending optimist and completely satisfied with his existence. Something appears to be not quite right in his head though. He is blessed with a foolish innocence, which proves to be an advantage in his case toward the airport. It is the characterization that makes The Castle different. Even though they live under miserable circumstances, they are happy; a low status on the social scale does not have to mean that the people are miserable. For the Kerrigans no troubles are too heavy. Of course several comic points are won with this opposite relationship, and it is very refreshing.
