Attacking Jews by day and reading the Torah by night, Danny Balint lives a life in contradiction. The Believer is based on a true story about a yeshiva student who turned anti-Semite. Being both a good fighter and an intellectual with a gift for holding speeches, he wins fame and respect within extreme right-wing circles. Soon though, he is reminded of the fact that you can't escape from your past. He can live with it but the question is, can the rest of the world?
The Believer emerged from ideas that director Henry Bean had been developing for almost 20 years. Ryan Gosling portraits the tormented Danny in this well written story that raises important questions about intolerance but doesn't pretend to answer them. The Believer won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Festival this year.
