The Acid House

The Acid House

av Paul McGuigan

The film is based on several short stories by Irvine Welsh. McGuigan delivers three episodes, all of them with a surrealistic touch, about a set of people in the working and lower class in Edinburgh.
The Granton Star depicts Boab Coyles most unlucky day ever. He gets sacked from the football team, dumped by his girlfriend and gets fired from his job. Maybe the situation can be rectified when he encounters God.
In A Soft Touch the easily manipulated Johnny gets a, putting it mildly, unsympathetic neighbour. He starts hitting on Johnny's wife in front of Johnny. Johnny has to accept that the two have an affair, at the same time as he himself is taken advantage of.
The last episode, which has given the name for the entire fi 1m, tells of Coco Bryce's wild life. He is very fond of acid and one day he takes an overdose. After
a chaos of memories and hallucinations, his soul enters another body while his own body is still in a coma at the hospital.
Paul McGuigan got offered to direct The Acid Housesince he had made several acclaimed documentaries, not the least Football, Faith and Flutes, which examines the mixture between religion and foot-
ball in western Scotland. One of the reasons he has stated for taking the offer, was that he was turning into Channel Four's Russ Meyer, making films about Russian go-go-dancers and transsexuals in Istanbul.
McGuigan took the job before the Welsh film Trainspottinghad opened. Since he knew that the two films would be compared he decided not to see Trainspottingbefore he finished his own production.
He has avoided the traditional image of Northern Edinburgh. Instead of despair and gray slums, he has gone in for a more virile imagery. Strong colours, styled environments, quick editing and loads of music.
Just like in Trainspotting, forgive the comparison, the soundtrack has collected an impressive array of artists. Beside The Verve, The Chemical Brothers and Nick Cave, Oasis, Primal Scream, Belle & Sebastian and Beth Orton contribute with new songs, and then we are not even halfway through all the contributors.
