Following his many self directed films - especially Golden lion-awardedHana-Bi (1997) - ''Beat'' Takeshi Kitano is a Japanese as well as aninternational superstar, writing, directing, acting and editing his archlypersonal films (not to mention acting in other films, writing newspapercolumns, painting, doing stand up comedy). For him to follow up re-creatinglegendary swordsman Zatocihi in the eponymous film that was his lastdirectorial outing in 2003 with this idiosyncratic turn which thematicallyfollows the lines of Spike Jonze`s directorial debut ''Being John Malkovich''.But with a distinctly different twist that only shows Kitano`s disregard for hisimage as well as for what the movie going public – especially for what the ''fans'' -should expect of him.Squaring superstar ''Beat'' Takeshi off against wanna-be actor and currentshort-order cook Kitano, a shy and diminutive personality who has yet toachieve anything of substance in the art and performance world which gives thisquirky and completely engrossing film a substance rarely seen incontemporary cinema.
