Takeshis’

Takeshis’

av Takeshi Kitano

Following his many self directed films - especially Golden lion-awarded Hana-Bi (1997) - ''Beat'' Takeshi Kitano is a Japanese as well as an international superstar, writing, directing, acting and editing his archly personal films (not to mention acting in other films, writing newspaper columns, painting, doing stand up comedy). For him to follow up re-creating legendary swordsman Zatocihi in the eponymous film that was his last directorial outing in 2003 with this idiosyncratic turn which thematically follows the lines of Spike Jonze`s directorial debut ''Being John Malkovich''. But with a distinctly different twist that only shows Kitano`s disregard for his image as well as for what the movie going public – especially for what the ''fans'' - should expect of him. Squaring superstar ''Beat'' Takeshi off against wanna-be actor and current short-order cook Kitano, a shy and diminutive personality who has yet to achieve anything of substance in the art and performance world which gives this quirky and completely engrossing film a substance rarely seen in contemporary cinema. Not many actor-writers-directors have the distance from their public personas as well as the daring to attempt anything such as Takeshis`. Even fewer have the talent. Or the cojones. JAN ELVSÉN
