Extreme in its abandonment of narrative forms, Sympathy for the Devil (originally named One + One and conceived literally as precisely this: one theme of construction as the audience follows the steps of the development of the Rolling Stones' rehersal of the song Sympathy of the Devil, and one theme of destruction as a white revolutionary girl committs suicide when her man gets involved in the Black Panther movement) is one out of many documentaries on the world's perhaps greatest rockband.
The production was problematic and the film turned into something of a collage of images and events which the audience is supposed to edit itself. In the final version, the producer added the complete recording of the song on to the end of the film, something which infuriated Godard (in a legendary incident at the London Film Festival in 1968, the enraged director assaulted producer Iain Quarrier).
