A motorbike races through the beautiful Nova Scotian countryside in eastern Canada. Paul Davis is here to search for the truth about his father: a traveling salesman who disappeared in this area more than ten years ago. He makes camp at an apparently uninhabited place to enjoy his surroundings for a few days. This is where Paul first catches sight of Rauchine, a young beautiful girl who gazes at him from a distance. He tries to establish contact with her but she is afraid and runs home to the desolate house in the forest where she lives with her mother, Megan. Curious about Rauchine, Paul makes his way there the next day. He receives a hostile, almost threatening reception but eventually succeeds in persuading Megan to let him help mend the roof on an outhouse. Paul sees it as an opportunity to get to know Rauchine. But he soon discovers that everything is not as it ought to be. Megan wants to keep Rauchine as the little girl who loves and fears her mother. She has total control over her daughter and isolates her completely from the surrounding world. When it becomes apparent that Paul wants to take her daughter away from her, he becomes a threat which has to be removed. Rauchine is aware of repressed emotions and is torn between her new passion and the complicated and dutiful relationship to her mother. But Paul is firmly resolved to wrench Rauchine from her mother's claws. Megan has the drama's most complex personality, bearing a certain resemblance to Norman Bates in Psycho. Both are characterized by a nightmarish past and are controlled by a ghostlike, often almost physically present mother figure from the past. Rauchine's love and dependence are the only things which can keep Megan's own gruesome memories at bay. Sweet Angel Mine is a psychological thriller about the power of the past with love as a lethal weapon. Using suggestive imagery, the beautiful landscape and innocent love are effectively contrasted with the dark evil and the stifling reverse of motherly love. Using short flashbacks and discrete clues, we gradually see a picture of what actually happened in the forest all those years ago. A terrifying pattern is about to be repeated. FS
