Sur

''Sur'' is the name of an elite music school in Tanuja Chandra's vibrant Bollywood musical. Lucky Ali plays Vikramaditya Singh, a renowned popular artist and music teacher. On a trip to the countryside, he hears the angelic voice of the young girl Tina who is singing in a church. Singh decides to bring her to the school and make her the student who will immortalize his music. Tina is faced with the combined difficulties of a demanding teacher and snobby classmates who do not accept her lower class background. Troubles mount as she begins to surpass her mentor and Singh is thrown into a downward spiral of jealousy. Sur is a musical about music itself. The addition of violins and other traditionally western instruments makes this Bollywood musical unique. Fantastic imagery from the beautiful mountains and shorelines of India augment the colourful soundtrack. The song and dance numbers are well incorporated into the storyline and energetically performed by Ali and the newcomer Gauri Karnik. NICOLE PAGLIA
