After living in Sao Paolo, 21-year-old Hermila returns to her native village with a newborn son, and eagerly awaits the arrival of her husband. When he doesn’t show up, she decides to do something about her situation. As many of the girls in the village prostitute themselves to survive, Hermila comes up with the idea of arranging a lottery, with herself and “one night in paradise” as the main prize. Though being criticized by people around her she uses the raffle to beat the Brazilian macho culture at it’s own game and to gain independence as a woman and a mother. The award-winning Karim Ainouz portraits Hermila by using picturesque photography, showing the poverty as well as the beauty of this Brazilian village, and the people living in it. Ainouz rebels against the traditional male-centred Brazilian culture by spotlighting strong independent women, surviving in a harsh world. The result is an engaging, thought evoking and beautiful down to earth film.NATALIE MAJERSKI
