Set in South Korea, Subway Kids 2002 is comparable to a Korean Kids or La Haine, but less ''happy'' and totally without hope. Human beings become illegal aliens when they leave China and enter the border to South Korea in their quest for a better life. The land of dreams is a lie and the only way to cope with it is through drugs. Bok-nam, a young Chinese boy, is searching desperately for his younger sister. But most everyone is looking for someone, anyone, to save them from their nightmare. Temporary alliances are established everywhere, only to fall apart, leaving everyone involved either empty, unsatisfied or dead. The cinematography and editing in Subway Kids 2002 are beautifu Ily accompl ished without ever overshadowing the story itself and its absence of intimacy and comfort. Director Jung-il Sohn graduated from the Korean Academy of Film Arts in South Korea earlier this year and this film was his exam project. It competed in the New Territories category at this year's Venice International Film Festival. NICKLAS DENNERMALM
