The twelve-year-old girl Jossi runs away after a huge row with her poor family. ''A boy takes his destiny into his own hands,
a girl is nothing'', her mother told her. Jossi takes her advice and stuffs her long hair away under a leather cap. She becomes Jonas. Just at the right moment she runs into a man who is well-known for his quickchange numbers, only the other way around. Bergslagen's own bold and stylish rebel, Lasse-Maja, takes her under his wings. The slender ''boy'' gets to commit miscellaneous thefts. Lasse-Maja becomes the happy friend that Jossi never had, and eventually her first Platonic love affair.
''The Master Thief's Apprentice feels straightforward and honest. A grim Swedish tale of friendship and deceit, with fine performances by Sara Moller as Jossi and Carlo Schmidt as Lasse-Maja.''
