On a clear winter night somewhere in Norrland something strange happens: three girls are born at almost exactly the same time and they are all given the name Johanna. Suddenly a strong star lights up in the sky - they have become ''star sisters'', and as such they belong together and one day they must be united so as not to feel lonely. I n three separate episodes Tobias Falk depicts the girls' separate adolescence. Gi nger Johan na doesn't want to sing solo in the girls' choir which is led by her mother, but rather wants to go in a hot air balloon with her father. Blonde Johanna on the other hand loves to sing, but her mother doesn't produce songs but plastic plants. Dark Johanna doesn't have a mother at all but lives alone with her father who works in the mines. It so happens that the three girls' paths cross on the eighth year during the winter festival that is arranged in the area. Starsisters is a contemporary story which appeals both to children and adults. With a simple pictorial language and direct address the film complicates the feeling of loneliness and the longing for friendship in a charming way. ''The three Johannas are portrayed with a captivating presence, and I am convinced that the girls' characters will find resonance with their peers. Many will probably also recognise the little problems, misunderstandings and disappointments, that can spring up between children and parents that don't know howto listen to each other,'' Bo Ludvigsson concluded in Svenska Dagbladet.
