In her first feature film, Janina Lapinskaite tells the story of a young mother that is gradually losing the grip of reality. Isolated in a big house on the Lithuanian countryside, the woman’s anxiety over her sick infantile son creates a growing distance between her and her seven-year-old daughter. The husband –preoccupied with his job in the city can’t relate to his wife’s depression and won’t see the daughter’s changing behaviour. As tension grows, a stray pregnant dog settles in the household. The isolated winter landscape, together with Lapinskaite’s efficient shift in camera angles and cold bluish light throughout the film, contribute to a feeling of mystery in Land of Glass. The mood is accentuated by the large, sparsely furnished house that the family inhabits, and the young actress playing the daughter, Urté Sejûnaité, who makes you think of Nicole Kidman’s spooky daughter in The Others.KRISTIN DJERF
