The heart-wrenching story of Stephanie Daley begins in the snowy hills of an American ski resort where a 16-year-old girl passes out with blood trickling down her boots. As her footsteps lead back to a trashcan where her newborn daughter is found dead, an investigation begins. Tilda Swinton plays the pregnant forensic psychologist with a psyche torn by a recent still birth. She takes on the task to find out what really happened to Stephanie Daley and so the two women’s stories begin to intertwine.Director Hilary Brougher conducts this raw, beautifully filmed drama-thriller with strong images that haunt you long after the end credits. Like for example, the one of the solitary, blood covered Stephanie, muffling a scream in a public toilet. Right there we put aside all questions of right and wrong as the facade of a strong woman shatters and the horror and inner torments of the young Stephanie Daley stare us dead in the eye. ERIK BREDHE
