PJ Lee stands at a crossroad where a dead end seems to wait whichever way he chooses. His 20-something life in a depressed industry town has been branded by dysfunction. His girlfriend breaks up with him. His parents are divorced; PJ’s father is facing manslaughter charges and his mother has a new family. His brother is married, but has an unhealthy attraction to liquor and women. When PJ gets fired, eviction looms around the corner. The situation improves when he moves in with his uncle Vic, but he still finds himself falling into the same vicious circle of failure as his fellow family members. Steel City, which competed in the dramatic competition category at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, portrays the rarely depicted relationship between working class men. Dramatic dialogue shows a harsh image of life in a decaying society. However, in the midst of economic and emotional disarray, delicate bonds are built, showing there is hope even when all seems lost.DEVI BRUNSON
