The film is set in Kansas around 1930. Teenagers Deanie and Bud are in love and want to get married, but their parents think they're too young and that they should wait. Bud's father, who has be-come rich from oil and climbing stock prices, first wants his son to get a good education. He suggests to Bud that he get a ''different sort of girl'' while at college, with whom he can live out his sexual urges. Bud obeys his father and breaks
up with Deanie.
After the break up, Bud starts a relationship with a loose girl and Deanie tries in vain to win him back. She suffers a nervous breakdown, and ends up in a mental institution. Bud enrolls at a good university and soon meets a new girl. Meanwhile, his father commits suicide after the stock market crash destroys the family fortune.
After a few years, Deanie leaves the institution. Back in Kansas she finds out what happened to Bud and his family. In an attempt to sort out the past, Deanie visits her former love on his ranch where he lives with his wife and kids.
