Robert felt like a male trapped in a female body, and as a 35-year-old mother of two, (s)he decided to go through with a sex change. Now diagnosed with ovarian cancer, Robert states with bitter irony that the last female part of him is the one that finally will kill him. Having been rejected by friends and community, he is now also refused treatment by local doctors.
To the unknowing eye, Robert, as well as his friends, look no different than other Georgia hillbillies, rugged with facial hair and flannels, smoking and adjusting their crotches like ''real'' men. The truth, though, involves closet life, pain, discrimination and loss, but most importantly, for the dying Robert and his transsexual partner Lola, it involves love.
Director Kate Davis met Robert Eads at a female-to-male convention in 1998 and overnight decided to make a film about him and his chosen family.
