Many directors have tried to take on the sensitive subject of pedophilia, but few have managed to do it as nuanced as Norwegian director Erik Richter. In his first feature film, Strand deals with the topic without either moralizing or speculating about it.Lars is a guy in his mid-twenties, working as an attendant at a swimming hall in Oslo. His violent nature is raised when he witnesses a middle-aged man trying to pick up Tim, a 14-year-old boy, outside the swimming hall. Armed with a video camera, Lars is trying to prove the man’s ill intentions. However, during his search for justice dark secrets are revealed and nothing turns out the way he intended.Sons is a very disturbing film and Richter Strand gives no clear answers on how to deal with the problem of child molesting. Tim’s finishing line “Is it over now?” still echoes when the film is over. The question will remain unanswered.PER NYSTRÖM
