Life at home becomes impossible for 16-year old Heidi when she is caught by her mother in the arms of her stepfather. This is the starting point of a journey through love, sex, abandonment and forgiveness in a frozen Australian landscape. Written by Shortland, Somersault is a straight forward coming of age drama,
The film stands out because of its beautiful and sensitive photo in heavily saturated colours and because of a camera that pays attention to the small, but important, details. Shortland manages to find a unique balance
between closeness and coldness, both physically and mentally.
Somersault is director Cate Shortland's feature debut and it has won acclaim both in Australia and abroad, It was screened in the section Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004.
