Smoking Room, the feature film- and writer/directorial debut by former award-winning advertisement- and art directors Julio D. Wallowits and Roger Gual, is a film about human individualism and selfishness set in the office of a Spanish company. A male employee is collecting signatures for a petition against the new no-smoking rule in the office area. On the surface, his colleagues first support the issue, but during one-to-one discussions different excuses for not signing the petition emerge. It's clear that everyone has something to hide, and the situation among the employees grows more and more dark and tense. Considering the directors background, one might have expected a stylish high concept debut film, instead team Wallowits and Gual deliver a film connected to 1940's neorealism mixed with today's Dogma-manifesto. Using the talents of some of Spain's most renowned actors, and letting them perform trivial dialogue shot with small cinematic means, these feature film debutantes have created a believable and very interesting film.
