A prostitute, clearly frightened by some unknown reason, is running away from a man asleep. She brings with her a map containing unveiling information, which the man considers very private. This action triggers a series of murders and the police is taken aback. The only one who may know how to stop the killings is a retired policeman suffering from insomnia.
With Sleepless, Argento wanted to return to his speciality, contemporary urban thrillers. Fans of the director may recognise the striking imagery and the feeling of an isolated universe that is Argento's trademark. According to Argento, the film carries a theme of childhood because that's when the most psychological damage is done. Sleepless is meant to be the first part of a trilogy with the same theme. Max von Sydow makes a beautiful interpretation and has been praised by critics all over.
