Roy Chutney lives in a typical American small town marked by prejudice and general poverty. Life is all about American football, and the town citizens celebrate as soon as a son, hence a potential six-man, is born. Altough Roy is one of the high school football team heroes, he's ditched when the new season is about to begin. Dreams, goals and ambitions fall apart. A loner called Gideon, ill-reputed by the rest of the small society, now becomes Roy's comforting mentor. ''Gid'' starts up a new football team, but the power of initiative and breaking ethical standards are long forgotten behaviour in this town, and will not pass unnoticed. Brothers Smith tell a multi-faceted story, a painting enforced by fog, testosterone and fists of steel, spawned from the frustrations of feeling stuck and being chained to routines. The Slaughter Rule is a display of courage and strength, aggressions and melancholy, expressed through an almost dreamy, poetic imagery that is mostly emphasized in the scenes taking place at the football field. Strong acting performances and a brilliant script, combined with fine cinematography, makes this film a pearl that would give even Bruce Springsteen a hard-on. Kasper Sperber
