In, what appears to be, a perfect bourgeois home, everything is turned upsidedown one day, when the father comes home with a rat. The son Nichola declares that he is gay, the maid's boyfriend Abdu becomes his first lover, the daughter in the house tries to kill herself, but ends up in a wheelchair, from which she terrorizes her boyfriend with S&M-games and tries to lure her father into an incestuous relationship. The father declines the offer with the motivation that incest will not solve the problems of western civilization. The mother tries to cure Nichola's homosexuality by offering her own body.
The bourgeoisie family and the home, as sexual institution is in focus in Francois Ozon's first feature film, which received a lot of attention in Cannes. The director plays with the fantasy of the spectator and lets dream and reality blend, among other th i ngs through the use of flash-backs.
The director is seeking to play with and deconstruct the sitcom-genre, as well as the notion of the family. In a closed environment, Ozon experiments with all the thing considered decent in the French film. He follows John Waters instead of the
French filmtradition and enjoys placing the grotesque and the subliminal next to each other.
Those who already have seen his short films, know that Ozon likes to explore sexuality and its extremes, among other things in the forms of incest and perversion, which is often very provocative toward the audience. Francois Ozon belongs to the young French filmmakers that have received most attention in France today.
