Based on an incredible event that took place in 1968, Silmido reveals a part of Korea's cold war history. Using a Hollywood formula, director Kang Woo-suk tells the story of 31 death row convicts, who were sent to the Island of Silmido. There they were prepared by the South Korean military for a mission to assassinate the North Korean president Kim n Sung.
After two years of hellish military training, they became killing machines, ready to storm the North Korean presidential palace.
However, by this time the relationship between North and South had grown warmer and the whole project was cancelled. To get
rid of all evidence, the Silmido unit had to be deleted.
Through panoramic landscape scenes, the drama is told of the rough treatment the excons had to go through. When the head of the training camp, played by top actor Sung-kee Ahn, passes the bad news to the men, they realize they have to revolt and try to escape the island of Silmido, or die.
With over ten million tickets sold, and being one of the most expensive movies ever made in Korea, Silmido has been one of this year's biggest cinematic events on the peninsula.
