A journey around the world in 24 hours, without leaving New York. Different cultures and languages in different boroughs, but with the same dreams in the same complex city.
Sylvie, Italian, tries desperately to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a famous designer. Former Indian movie star Vikram attempts to live out his fame one last time at the expense of h is brother's hospitality in Staten Island. West-Indian Errol in Brooklyn dreams about driving his new amazing Cadillac convertible, but his wife locked away the keys to avenge her grandmother's stolen china. The Romanian Josif will quit his baseball gambling as soon as he scores big, and can move away from Queens to a nice house with his wife. Over in the Bronx, the Puerto Rican Ramon dreams about his beautiful girlfriend Marisol, and wonders how he can tell her that he is actually not a married businessman, but a butcher's apprentice with a shabby apartment.
Director Tony Gerber, of Romanian Jewish descent, and his wife Lynn Nottage, descendant from a long line of AfricanAmerican New Yorkers, wrote Side Streets together. The idea arose when it was discovered that Tony's father and Lynn's
mother were raised only a few blocks away from each other in Brooklyn. Despite completely different cultural backgrounds, they still shared the same childhood memories.
Side Streets was shot on location in New York, and all scenes, exteriors as well as interiors, were shot on the right place and in the right borough. An enormous project, but well worth it if you ask the film makers. The film shows how one single city can be inhabited by so many different cultures and people, which really are a lot more alike than you would think.
