”She's so Lovely” is the portrayal of an uncompromising love affair between two unusual existences. This is Nick Cassavetes' second feature film, after his debut, Unhook the Stars, which according to the director himself, was made as a tribute to his mother, Gena Rowlands. In his new film he grapples with the demanding responsibility of stepping into his father's shoes and making a film using an original Screenplay by John Cassavetes, written 20 years ago.
Sean Penn, who was awarded the prize for best actor at Cannes this year for his portrayal of the hot-tempered Eddie, was chosen for the role already by John Cassavetes himself. Ever since Sean Penn made his directorial debut with ”Indian Runner”, he had dreamt of directing ”She's so Lovely ” himself, and took out an option on the screenplay. It turned out, however, that the project was difficult to finance (furthermore he wanted to make the film in black and white), so Penn finally gave up.
When Nick Cassavetes then took over the project in connection with the shooting of his debut film, which was also produced by the French company Hachette Première, Sean Penn had already written himself into the lead. It was also he who suggested his wife-to-be, Robin Wright, to play opposite him. The result was an explosive love story with a very intimate interplay between the two of them, though a lot of room was given also to the supporting roles, Harry Dean Stanton, Debi Mazar, Gena Rowlands - and particularly to John Travolta, who plays the third man in this romantic tale, which towards the end develops into a triangle drama somewhere between comedy and tragedy.
Nick Cassavetes, who himself has a sound background as an actor, gets to show his talents in ”She's so Lovely” as a people's director. Herein lies the film's greatest asset, together with the lively script and the sharp and often hilarious dialogue. Cassavetes has confirmed that as a director he is here to stay.
