Shadow of the Vampire, circles around the, mythic production of the Vampire classic Nosferatu, directed by one of the foremost of the German expressionists of the 1920's: F.W. Murnau (played by Malkovich). In his stubbornness and quest for, perfectionism, Murnau wants to make the most believable vampire film ever, complete with the foremost silent film actors and with Transylvanian authenticity. For the part as the biting Count Orlock he has - without the knowledge of the rest of the team - discovered the unknown method actor Max Schreck (played by Dafoe). But is it actually possible to get so totally swallowed up by one's acti ng part? This is a masterly manipulated genre film with dated iris zoom-in, silent film mimic and a fantastic Dafoe in the character creation of his lifetime. The result is one of the absolute must of the fiIm year.
