An untraditional war drama, where Steiger - who was in the navy during the Second World War - plays the sergeant with the ''unusual'' feelings for a young private. This adaptation of Dennis Murphy's novel about a military man burdened with guilt and his awakening insight into his homosexuality takes place in France during the 50s. The young object for the sergeant's feelings is played by John Philip Law, who has said: ''We were at that time on the verge of the new system for grading films. We made three different versions of some of the scenes, such as the one where the sergeant kisses me. We made one ''real'' version and one for TV, where I get a hug. The film was very controversial at the time, but from that point of view it is pure lemonade today. From another aspect I think The Selgeant is one of the best performances he (Steiger) has given. Every time I see it, I get extremely moved by his character. It is a very powerful film and his contribution is immense.''
