Marcus seems to be living an idyllic life with his wife Ella in a village outside of Berlin. But during a work-weekend he drinks too much and wakes up in another woman’s apartment. They start a passionate affair, even though he still loves his wife. Marcus is torn between the two women and his shilly-shallying leads to awful consequences, when large feelings in a deceptively small package threaten to explode. The story gives the audience just enough information through the sparse dialogue and moderate performances. With simple means, Grisebach has created an impressively strong film about love and its mysterious ways. Love can surprise you, and so will the director. Her way of telling the story, poetic but yet realistic, resembles the Dardennes brothers. Longing for something is powerful, bittersweet, wonderful and dangerous – and so is this film.
