Salesman

Salesman

av Albert & David Maysles

Four bible salesmen travel around the United States in order to persuade people to buy their exclusive Catholic bible. The camera is ever present during three weeks of their lives, which lead to unexpected private encounters between the salesmen and their customers. When Salesman was first screened in '1969 it was considered a landmark within documentary filmmaking, and it is still of importance as an insight into the American Dream. Four eccentric characters are portrayed and they use every sales pitch under the sun. They also have nicknames which reveal the technique they use during visits to customers, ''Rabbit'' and ''Bull'' for example. Salesman is an expressive and emotional documentary about one of our least liked professions. The Critics: ''I've seen Salesman three times, and each time I'm more impressed ... fascinating ... very funny ... unforgettable.'' (Vincent Canby, New York Times) ''An exploration of pathos, terror, humor and courage - along with the vicissitudes of one man’s life.'' (Boston Globe)
