Mira Nair's story about the life of a poor twelve-year old boy in Bombay has had an enormous affect on audiences worldwide. It shows that the director is a documentary film maker - her movies capture and bring forward a feeling for the swarm of the masses and the sizzling vitality of the city. The film shows the poverty and cruelty that is everyday life with a clarity that is otherwise missing in Indian films. Salaam Bombay! Is a strong, emotional film and handkerchiefs are recommended. But above all, the portrait ofthe main character Shafiq Shyed is filled with a sense of joy, zest for life.
