Three teenagers experience a chaotic summer in Helsinki. As a result of their drug addiction, they are indebted to a drug dealer, who forces them to go to Stockholm in order to smuggle back drugs to Finland.
”The Freakin' Beautiful World” is not something for those looking for a calm film, both in sight and sound. The film takes off at a rampant speed and rarely slows down. The picture imagery seems to be taken from MTV-aesthetics, with zooming handy-cams and crooked picture angles. The soundtrack roars of very loud and modern rock music. It is not without a reason that Variety magazine compared it to ”Trainspotting”.
Lust like Danny Boyles film portrayed a group of rootless drugged out teenagers in Glasgow, Jarmo Lampelas film portrays their spiritual family in Helsinki. Ippe lives together with his divorced mother, Papu lives with his alcoholic mother and younger brother, trying desperately to keep his family together. The girl that completes the trio is Mia, who has run away from home looking for heavier and heavier drugs. Although the three of them know that the life they lead can only lead to destruction, they seem incapable of leaving it behind.
With the help of three talented young actors, Lampela is able to very realistically portray the trials and tribulations of people living in today's Helsinki. He recounts of people and surroundings that we here in Sweden have not encountered before, not in the least as a result of the fact that very few Finnish films are shown in Sweden.
Like a lot of other directors who get involved in the thematics surrounding youth and drugs, Lampela is optimistic. He does see a light at the end of the tunnel and recognises that friendship and understanding will ultimately lead the main characters in the right direction.
An interesting sequence in the movie, from a Swedish perspective, is when the three youngsters go to Sweden in order to purchase and smuggle home drugs. The Swedish capital has seldom, in this way, been portrayed as an international centre for narcotics.
