In her second feature film, writer and director Anne Villacèque explores a less glamorous side of the French Riviera than the one we are used to. This sharp and disturbing tale revolves around the relationship between a lonely middle-aged woman, Antoinette, and her beautiful teenage daughter, Stella. Antoinette, played by the famous French actress Miou-Miou, works as a chambermaid in a luxurious hotel in a French resort, while Stella, played by Vahina Giocante, works nights as a go-go dancer in a local techno club. Frustrated by her daughter’s way of life, Antoinette indirectly introduces her to Romansky, a seemingly respectable real estate agent staying at the hotel. As it turns out, Romansky is not so harmless.Largely shot in extreme close ups, Riviera’s focus is on the two main characters. The spectacular scenery which gave the movie its name, is never allowed to get in the way of the story. Even though the mother and daughter remain apart throughout most of the film, Villacéque still manages to illustrate the close relationship between them.KRISTIN DJERF
