Introverted Juzo moves into an apartment building in a run down Tokyo suburb. In the apartment above lives his childhood bully Akai. To get closer to his antagonist Juzo takes a job at the construction site Akai is managing. Without recognizing his former school friend, Akai shows his true, and never forgotten face in a toilet incident already the first day at work. Juzo’s steady growing need to make amends soon wins over his tranquil existence. After eliminating a complaining neighbor he befriends Seki, a colleague bullied by their boss in the same way as Juzo – which in kanji also can be read as thirteen. But when he realizes that Seki is not the helping hand he’s hoping for there is no turning back.Neighbour No Thirteen is based on the manga by the same name by charismatic artist Santa Inoue. For many years reluctant to the idea of turning his comic book into a film Inoue finally agreed to make the eagerly longed-for adaptation. In this split personality piece-de-revenge debut, which briefly brings film festival flicks such as Old Boy and Fight Club to mind, two of today’s best young Japanese actors star in leading roles along with a cameo from famous horror director Takashi Miike, facing early brutal death.
