Matt Dow rides into the American Western town with his protege Davey. People mistakenly think that they are train robbers
and Davey is wounded by a bullet. They are forced to seek refuge in a Swedish family of farmers, where the daughter is played by Viveca Lindfors. Matt, who falls in love with the daughter, accepts the offer of becoming sneriff of the town with the task of capturing some bank robbers. The bitterness caused by the bullet wound, leads Davey to choose to live on the wrong side of the law.
Comment:
Run For Cover, not a typical Western, but a Western ... Nicholas Ray would never direct anything typical ... Only typically Ray ... He was an artist and therefor everything he touched was unique ... He was a complex man ... Unique in his directions, intimate with his actors ... Careful about the inner space ...
I had just begun working with Strasberg at the Actor's Studio ... Not quite ready yet for Ray ... Certainly not for Cagney ... What an enormous talent... Flexible ... Inventive .. Quick in the mind ... Quick on his feet... I
loved his work Will always ... I am closer to
his level now Hope I get a second chance
with him up there ... I have two dreams: To play Dance of Death by Strindberg with Rydeberg and The Visit by Friedrich Durrenmatt with Cagney ... I can always dream ... Can't 17 ...
Images of Cagney come back to me ...
I was still living in Sweden, barely yet an actress when seeing him in Yankee Doodle
Dandy I sat there watching him on the screen Letting him fill me with lusts,
desire, life, energy and that want! ... That want that takes you across the oceans .. Yes it is catching ... Unconsciously maybe it started me dreaming about America ... watching him .. And now I was making a film with him ...
Run For Cover is a fine film ... Not Ray's best. .. He was stronger working small lowbudget films ... More in control ... Authority, supervision is hard for the artist... Yet Cagney survived and functioned under all circumstances ... I never caught him beeing untrue or unreal and always exciting ... and disciplined ...
Run For Cover was shot on location not far from Denver, Colorado ... I was anxious to get back to New York ... I had moved there now ... Married the Hungarian (Tabori) and was anxoius to get back to the Actor's Studio. ''There is more to you than Hollywood has used'', Strasberg said to me ..
I wanted his insight and help ... To learn how to function ... I was aware of that.. Sometimes I did fully ... Other times I could nat. .. An actor's nightmare ... Come to think of it. .. I was just beginning to understand that to Run For Cover (in actual meaning) was no longer possible for me if I wanted to be a great actress ... And I wanted to ..
