Paul Weiss, an exile Romanian living in Vienna, travels to Timisoara to retrieve his injured friend, Dominic, from the turmoils of the Revolution. At the hospital, however, he is not allowed to see his friend, and the journalists have already labelled him ”The Butcher of Timisoara”. Paul decides to discover the truth, but is now in danger, the Securitate are after him.
Comment:
Romanian exile Robert Dornhelm has returned to his native city of Timisoara to make Requiem for Dominic, based on an event during the confused days of the revolt. This is a mixture of fictitious and documentary material in which an innocent person becomes implicated in a tissue of lies and fear staged by Securitate men whose aim is to sow anarchy and disorder before a democratic mentality can gain a foothold among the population. Although it is neither ethically nor aesthetically flawless, this film can help us to understand the situation in Romania, the political chaos, and uncertainty as to what groups and individuals stand for and what is really present behind the most benevolent-looking mask of democracy.
