A PTA in 1936, the lecturer talks about a big threat to the children, “the real public enemy number one” – marijuana. He shows a film to the petrified parents, the true story of Jimmy Harper. An innocent high school student and 4H member who, after his first contact with the new drug, is transformed into a sex crazed, lying, stealing, killing monster, literally with one foot in the grave. Before his decadent descent however, we are treated to several traditional Hollywood song and dance numbers. In 1936 there actually was a film called Reefer Madness, which seriously warned parents about the effects of the drug. It soon turned into a cult movie, especially when marijuana grew in popularity as a stimulant. In 2000 it inspired a stage musical, which in turn was adapted for the screen, with the same director and several of the original cast members. With a great sense for the visual, and balance between the ironic and straight bizarre, Reefer Madness is a highly entertaining satire in the spirit of Rocky Horror Picture Show. But without the horror. HENRIK EMILSON
