Rancid

Rancid

av Jack Ersgard

In a house, Monica Klein lies stabbed to death in the bed. With her is failed writer and journalist James Hayson, who has just started dating Monica, his high school sweetheart. A high-tempo police manhunt begins, with James as the target and main suspect of the killing. His old friend Andy, a cop, is the only one who helps him out, and he does so in secret.
As the chase is pursued, the events leading up to the murder are revealed through flashbacks. It is an effective way of telling the story, with pieces of information gradually put out, so that you never know who
did what, or why, until the very end. The American cop cliches are well depicted, with the talented Matthew Settle playing the lead role as the hunted is just as unshaved, sweaty and confused as a good thriller suspect should be.
The producer, director and scriptwriter of Rancid are all Swedish, as are parts of the cast. The movie is largely set in New York, although mainly filmed in Stockholm, Sweden, with a couple of shootings from Los Angeles and New York. This thriller is the most conscious attempt to reach beyond Sweden's borders for some time.
