Radiance

Radiance

av Rachel Perkins

When young Nona calls her mother to
tell her that she is pregnant, her sister tells her that their mother had just passed away. Nona goes back to her mother's house, the house where Nona was born and where her sister has been staying during the mother's last years. Nona's older sister, Cressy, who is a celebrated opera-singer, also returns to attend the funeral.
Radiance is a chamber drama, intensive as a Lars Noren-play. It is completely centered around the three women, who are all different from each other, but where there also exist an extra wide gap between Nona and her much older sisters.
Louis Nowra's screenplay is partly based on his own play, and Rachel Perkins has when adapting the screenplay to the screen, opened up the story, but it is still easy to sense the stage original. The fi 1m takes place almost exclusively in the mother's house. The screen mostly centers around the images of the faces of the sisters, but those segments are interchanged with images of reflections on a water surface and cloud formations, which paradoxically both breaks up the film and heightens the concentration.
Deborah Mailman, who plays Nona, played the same roll in the recent Queensland Theatre Company's stage production of Radiance. Both Rachel Maza and Trisha Morton-Thomas have played their parts
in stage productions of the play, so it is an experienced cast, even if their prior knowledge in film is limited. Rachel Maza has, however, starred in a few movies, among them A Fistful of Flies, which was screened at the Stockholm Film Festival in 1996, and got subsequent distribution in Swedish movie-theaters.
