Rabbit Proof Fence

Rabbit Proof Fence

av Philip Noyce

Rabbit Proof Fence is based on a book by Doris Pilkington, the daughter of the actual Molly Craig, and describes what happened to young Molly, her sister Daisy and their cousin Gracie in Australia in 1931. The Aboriginal people are being mistreated and children with white fathers and Aboriginal mothers are taken from their families and put in rehabilitation camps to ''become white''. This is what happens to the three girls, and while the camp is not such a horrible place it is not home. When the opportunity arises, the girls set off on a marathon journey by foot. This is not appreciated by the chief protector of the rehabilitation camp, Mr Neville, a man while not necessarily evil, still convinced of the success of the program he is working on. The stubbornness of the girls sets an important example, never let anybody stand in the way of your dreams, and do what you believe you must. The camera sweeps over the Australian Outback, giving the audience the impression of walking in the girls' shoes, and hopefully also a feeling of the willpower they possess. LISA TAUBE
