The boss of a large advertising agency suddenly dies. By mistake he is replaced by a black employee, Putney Swope. Since those who took part in the vote could not imagine that he would be elected, everybody voted for him. As a boss Putney Swope is ruthless and opportunistic. He fires all the white people in high positions and replaces them with militant Blacks. The agency is also renamed Truth and Soul, Inc. The response from Swope's obscene marketing is good and he is frequently hired by rich, white clients. He steals all his ideas and behaves as ruthlessly as his predecessor ever did.Putney Swope is a comedy, an unpleasant one. It attacks every aspect of society even the president, portrayed as a dwarf in the film. The Critics:''To call the film undisciplined would be a considerable understatement.'' (D Wilson, Monthly Film Bulletin 1970) ''Argumentativeness combined with originality and black humour is not a bad beginning.'' (Dagens Nyheter 1971) ''Putney Swope is a controversial satire, mischievous and intellectually promiscuous.'' (Svenska Dagbladet 1971) ''Putney Swope is vicious and vile, the most offensive picture I've ever seen. This one retched. If intelligent people must see it, take along your retch-bags.''
