Purple Butterfly

Purple Butterfly

av Lou Ye

Purple Butterfly is the name of a resistance movement operating in Shanghai atthe end of 1920's, Ding Hui (played by Zhang Ziyi, the martial-arts princess in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) is one of the agents fighting against the Japanese occupation forces, but she is also a girl who ol1ce upon a time met a boy. As a result of both war, chaos and
life itself, the destinies of various individuals intersect. Life will take its course and nobody will really be able to steer or stop the course of events,
Award-winner director Lou Ye tells his story in a tempo paralleling life itself, now painfully slow, now so fast that the eye can hardly make sense of what is going on. He tells us
about the struggle to survive in a romantic drama filted with misty train stations, flashes of bittersweet love, and shootings. Lou Ye's narrative technique is whimsical, demanding full attention from the public. At times, when there are lon'g breaks in the dialogue, the story is told using the facial expressions of the characters. Zhang Ziyi is very convincing in the main role. Her interpretation of Ding Hui's growing physical and mental introversion is well-nigh painful to see, And her sleepless nights are reflected on the face of the audience, too.
Purple Butterfly was nominated for the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
