Pups

Pups

av Ash

After failing in a not too serious attempt to commit suicide, the 13-year-old Stevie finds his mother's gun. On his way to school together with his friend/girlfriend Rocky, he suddenly decides to rob a bank. During the robbery a guard manages to raise the alarm. The two adolescent robbers find themselves surrounded by heavily armed police, which leads them to take staff and customers as hostages. Their violent acts are covered by the media and are immediately become breaking news. PUPS premiered in April this year and was well received. A number of studios wanted to meet Ash, but only two days later the killings in Littleton, Colorado changed everything. Since PUPS depicts the two youths as ordinary, and in many respects, sympathetic teenagers, the studios found the film too controversial, and thus too risky, to distribute. Take, therefore, this opportunity to see the film, because this cinematic experience stays with you a longtime. What is especially impressive is the two young actors' self-assured and impulsive acting- not at all unlike a young Angela Dickinson versus a premature Al Pacino. Also worth mentioning are the ways in which the claustrophobic feelings in the bank slowly increase. PUPS has many things in common with Sidney Lumet's Dog Day Afternoon - which indeed is mentioned by name in Ash's film, partly in the witty allusion to the latter's title, referring to the similar dog's life the two couples are leading, but predominantly in the violent resignation the two films, in highly different but equally touching ways, portray. PUPS is, something as rare as an honest film, in the best sense of the word.
