As a baby, Dong Dong was found in a public toilet in Beijing. Named the ''God of toilets'', his fascination in this domain never ceases and as a young man he contemplates the function of toilets within the human existence. What actually happens to the piss and the shit? Is it all ''wasted'' down the drain, so to speak? Dong Dong is convinced that a special form of urine, a so-called ''virgin's urine'', may cure his dying grandmother and he therefore goes on a journey in search of it. On the road he meets other individuals concerned with similar quests. Director Fruit Chan strikes a blow for the environment and our perception of it. In Public Toilet he delivers the message of human destruction in regard to our bodily waste on a global scale, reaching from New York to Pusan. The bizarre fascinations of the main characters combined with psychedelic toilet dives a la Trainspotting contradicts more political motifs and creates ambiguity in Chan's work. But although some sequences seem ironic, the main focus on global commitment and preservation of our environment is apparent. Using the human life cycle as a symbol, Chan puts attention to our necessary devotion to the environmental cause. Johan Lindqvist
