Shane Carruth immediately succeeds in setting an eerie and captivating mood in his feature-lenght debut. As the curtain goes up, or in this case the garage door, it reveals four men occupied with some sort of experiments. From the beginning the audience is being lulled into submission by a voice over asking for no interruptions and complete attention. The voiceover might tell its story from the future or perhaps the images we see are from the past. Either way, it soon becomes apparent that the experiments conducted by the garage-based scientists will come to a gruesome end.
Primer is a film that will divide the audience because it truly is a mindscrewing experience that will take either multiple viewings or razorsharp and 100 percent attentive senses to fully grasp. It clearly has some kinship, although in different ways, with films like Darren Aronofsky' s Pi, Chris Marker's LaJetee and Sophia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides, but at the end of the day it definitely represents a breed of its own. And well-bred it is.
