Clam Dandy, a rock-group with female members in the late thirties, is on the verge of break or make. And the former seems much more realistic. For 20 hard years they’ve suffered the bittersweet share of local club-gigs, and as time have passed them by, the dream has almost gone down the drain as well. Jackie is the ring leader, desperate and anxious to take over the world before her 40th birthday, which is two days away. Annoying people on the side, such as no-good-boyfriends, are threatening to destroy Clam Dandy, and as the plot develops, the girls must put in one last big effort.
It’s not an easy thing to say whether the film is supposed to be sarcastic or not, but seen to its content and views of the business, it honestly should be. It raises questions of when to stop dreaming and grow into the role as a bitter could-have-been? Although Prey for Rock & Roll gives a somewhat hopeful suggestion, reality would say ten years ago. Clam Dandy doesn’t have a record deal, but what both the band and the film do have is star quality in its leading figure. Gina Gershon deserves to become a big star after playing the wild amazon of sparkling hair and fitness of a statue, giving graze and hope to untalented rockers across the planet, even if they’re 20 or not.
