Pop in Reykjavik

Pop in Reykjavik

av Agust Jakobson

Pop in Reykjavik is, just as the title reveals, a documentary about the pop-scene in Iceland. The gay celebrity Paul Oscar acts as a guide through the nightlife and clubs. One by one we meet the most important up-and-coming young bands. There's everything from pop to hardcore, techno, rap and hip-hop. Clips from concerts are mixed with interviews. It's serious and thorough. The film and the young musicians emphasise two things: Icelandic pop is just I ike the Icelandic night, wild and untamed, and Iceland is so small, innocent and isolated that the bands can calmly develop independently and on their own. The film would not have to be ashamed of itself on MTV. The whole aestheticism of the music video is there. There are odd, bold camera angles, extreme wide-angle close-ups, stage clips in slow motion, fast cuts, restless camera and cool situations with crazy band members and other originals. Overall, we get the feeling of a lively and pulsating Icelandic pop-scene. Every frame looks good and is carefully thought out, from the stage clips to the backstage and at-home-interviews. And the members of each band get plenty of time to speak their mind. It is fun, if maybe a bit more MTV than Iceland.
