Pikkusisar

Pikkusisar

av Taru Mäkälä

''I won't cry,'' says Katri Ruuska, (Vera Kiiskinen) a recently Widowed voluntary nurse, upon her arrival to work at a hospital. Katri certainly has reasons to cry: her husband died in the winter war (1939,1940) right after the wedding. But emotions must be shelved during wartime. just as food is rationed, so are emotions, Katri stifles her grief with work. But before she knows it, she's trapped by her feelings. The memories of her late husband still haunt Katri while she seems unable to choose between two new men in her life. The film shows the burden the Finnish women at the home front had to deal with. Bottling up your emotions is a part of Finnish identity, and Mäkelä shows how the war fuelled this.
