Cho Chang-Ho's debut film sets us behind Han-Soo, a high-school student who is facing problems much bigger than most teenagers do. Although Han-Soo is the best swimmer at school, he quits unexpectedly for no particular reason, other than that he feels his swimming won't amount to anything. The same day during class, he is told that his mother has fallen into a coma after an attempted suicide. Han-Soo is suddenly not a teenager going through puberty, but a parent to his unconscious mother, and must now take care of himself, eventually dropping out of high-school to cope with his current situation. This movie deals with pressures that we all may face throughout puberty - sexual frustration, betrayals, and teenage crushes. The score plays an important role in the film, tying in with the story in a subtle way. But none the less, this is another great example of the growing number of splendid films that have been coming out of South Korea in the last few years.PATRICK CROTTY
