Something is lurking beneath the surface in the depths of Tokyo harbour. Two police officers, Hata and Kusumi, are investigating the recent deaths of labour robots and find a connection to a plane crash earlier the same w~. During the investigation, Hata falls in love with Saeko, a university lecturer Whose involvement in the case surprise1i him. Ten years after the release of its prequel, the third anime feature about'the Patlabor robots of the Tokyo police dePartment shifts ,viewpoint and lets two civilian officers stand in the centre of the story. Veteran cop Kusumi resembles the detectives of the 50's noir movies while younger Hata incorporates stylistics of the older heroes but at the same time is aware of the new technologies. Director Fumihiko Takayama creates a fusion between different genres as the traditional detective narrative evolves into a thrilling monster story. It becomes another fine example of manga using the same techniques as any fei:!ture film, but surpassing them and defining new territories of realism within animated films. JOHAN LINDQVIST
