Party Monster

Party Monster

av Fenton Bailey & Randy Barbato

Based on the book Disco Bloodbath by James St James (played in the film by Seth Green, and also the narrator and co-star of the film), this is the true story of Michael Alig, a bullied kid from the Midwest who went to New York and became the hottest party promoter of the early 90’s. Surrounded by a faithful group of club kids, Alig leads a careless life of decadence where being fabulous means everything, and common is a four-letter-word. But what appears to be a cartoon-ish fairytale turns into a dark story of excess in every shape and form. Calling the film a disco Scarface may be pushing it too far, but Macauley Culkin’s Alig has motifs pretty similar to those of Tony Montana. To him, New York is the land of dreams where everything can be done, as long as it is outrageous enough, an attitude which eventually leads to him killing a dealer during a drug-craze.
Directors Bailey and Barbato have previously made a documentary on Alig with the same title, and this is their feature version, a debut packed with three decades of dancefloor fillers, from Dead or Alive to Ladytron and Felix Da Housecat. With Marilyn Manson as a jaded drag queen, and boasting some incredible outfits, this is not run-of-the-mill-cinema.
